Dr. von Rueden is an Elliott Associate Professor and Chair of the Fine Arts Department at Hampden-Sydney College. In 2021, she was awarded the Cabell Teaching Award for Teaching Excellence. She teaches courses across multiple music fields with specialty in choral music and social behavior in music as well as piano, music history, music music theory, and the role of music in social change. She has previous teaching experience at the University of Richmond, St. Catherine's School, the Virginia Girls Choir, and the University of California, Santa Barbara where she directed the Women's Chorus and Men's Chorus.
Service is important to Dr. von Rueden, as evidenced in her chairship of the Intercultural Affairs Committee, Chair of the Fine Arts Department, previous member and Chair of the Gender Issues Committee, and her role as a student advisor.
Outside of H-SC, Dr. von Rueden has served as a national board member for the National Collegiate Choral Organization and as an Adjudicator for the Virginia Music Educator's Association, Honor Choir Auditions, and District Assessments.
